What to Expect at UMABCWorshipOur Sunday morning worship service is at 10:00. The service lasts about an hour, and it is a blend of old traditions and new. When you arrive, you will be greeted by our friendly ushers who will give you a bulletin to guide you through all the stuff we'll be doing in the service. Feel free to sit anywhere you'd like in the sanctuary. When you get to your seat, you will notice a pink paper in the pew back pocket in front of you. If you have a specific prayer or praise that you would like us to know about, you can write it on that paper. After the choir has sung, a Care Minister (people from the congregation who send cards and letters, keep the prayer chain up and running, etc) will collect the pink cards and lead the congregation in prayer for them. When the service has ended, you're invited to the Memorial Room down the hall from the sanctuary (just follow the crowd) for coffee, lemonade, and delicious snacks.
Children in WorshipChildren are loved and nurtured here. As a congregation, we feel it is part of our commitment to help them grow and learn in their faith - including learning how to worship. During the worship service, we have a Moment with Young Disciples (children's sermon) when the kids have special time to chat with the pastor at the front of the church. There are "Kid's Worship Packs" (with a special bulletin for the children, crayons and paper to draw on) available at the Welcome Center just outside the sanctuary. Just ask an usher when you walk in and they can show you where they are. If you are new to worshiping with young children, here are some tips and information.
CommunionOur church practices what we call "open communion." Anyone and everyone is invited to take communion at our church, whether or not you have been baptized, whether or not you are a member. All that we ask is that you come seeking to be united with Christ in the sacrament of communion. We recognize that the communion table is not our table, it is Christ's table and so it is open to all people. We receive communion on the first Sunday of every month.
Sunday SchoolChildren's Sunday School meets during the worship service. The children are in the sanctuary during the first part of worship and are invited to go to Sunday School following the Moment with Young Disciples (children's sermon). We have a "one room school house" model of Sunday school, with all of the elementary age students in one classroom. The children's classroom is located on the upper level of the church.
We have several adult Sunday School classes for adults. One of the classes meets on the upper level of the church and is studying the "Postcard Books" of the Bible. The other class meets in the basement. They are currently studying the gospel of Mark. You're invited to join either class at 9:00 on Sunday mornings.
ParkingWe have a parking lot on the south side of the church building, as well as a few spots in front. When you walk in the front doors of the building you will be right by the sanctuary. If you go up the stairs and enter the side door you will walk into the Memorial Room.
ClothesRegular attendees at our church wear everything from dresses and heels to shorts and sandals. Please dress for worship in whatever way makes you comfortable.
AccessibilityThere is an outside ramp on the south side of the church building which accesses the front doors of the church. When you walk into those doors, you will be right by the sanctuary. There are stairs to get to the Memorial Room as well as the church office. If you need assistance on Sunday morning, please let one of the ushers know. If you have other questions or concerns, please contact the pastor. United Methodist-American Baptist Church
